What is the Difference between materials and uses for the Cricut? Let me tell you all about Cricut Iron-On, Vinyl, Infusible Ink, and MORE!

There are countless materials you can use for for Cricut Machine, and it can be a bit daunting to know which Cricut materials and uses you need for your project, so I’m going to break it down for you!

Cricut Machine Basics

Cricut Materials and Uses – Vinyl

What is is?

Cricut Vinyl can be permanent or removable, comes in many different colors, and patterns and you can also get it textured.

I think it’s the easiest material to use, so if you’re a beginner, you can start with vinyl for your Cricut Materials. You’ll simply place it on the mat, do your magic in Cricut Design Space, cut, then place.

What is it used for?

I’ve used vinyl for a number of projects, and I think it’s the most versatile material out there, but here’s a few ideas using removable vinyl from my blog:

For permanent vinyl, you can label coffee mugs or tumblers, or even create outdoor signage – which I used when my mom owned a catering business and I’m pretty sure the next owners had to hire someone to remove it because it was going to stay on there forever.

Cricut Iron-On

What is it?

As the name suggests, Cricut Iron-on is a material that when you add heat to the mix, it adheres to the material.

After you cut out your design, you can use an iron, heat press, or Cricut EasyPress.

What is it used for?

It’s great for fabric projects, but I’ve also used it on wood.

Everyday Iron-on
Glitter Iron-on – this is my absolute FAVORITE iron-on. It’s so easy to work with, so if you’re a beginner, I would start here.

SportFlex Iron-On – Use this for stretchy materials
Premade Iron-on Designs – these are cool because you don’t have to cut them out…they are ready to go!

Cricut Paper Products

What is it?

I got started in the Cricut world with paper…because printables. If you love working with paper crafts, you’re going to be blown away by all the paper materials you can use with your Cricut.

What is it used for?

They sky’s the limit with paper! Here’s a few paper crafts you can make with Cricut Paper Materials:

Here are my

Cricut Pens – use on multiple paper craft surfaces
Cardstock – I always want to have white and black cardstock handy, but you can choose a variety of colors.
Glitter Cardstock – great for adding accents!
Shimmer Paper – this is my FAVORITE accent paper to use. I love the glittery sheen, but it’s smooth, so really easy to work with.
Corrugated Cardboard
Kraft Board
Brushed Paper – this is super cool textured paper
Scrapbook Paper

Cricut Infusible Ink

What is it?

You would use Infusible Ink like you use Iron-on, only it’s completely permanent because it fuses to the material. You can work with Infusible Ink sheets or Pens, so it’s a really fun material to work with.

What is it used for?

There are a few limitations with Infusible Ink – it only works on certain products, but I usually use Cricut Blanks because they’re created especially for infusible ink sheets and pens.

You can use the EasyPress for most blanks, or the Cricut MugPress for mugs (which is my new favorite toy, by the way).

This includes all the Infusible Ink Products, because they’re all fantastic–it just depends on what project you want to create.

Infusible Ink Sheets – comes in a variety of colors and patterns.
Infusible Ink Pens – the thing I love about the pens is that you don’t have to use the Cricut – you can draw your own design on regular paper! Just keep in mind the design will be backwards once you apply it to the material, so make sure you write any text backwards.
Cricut Blanks – I love everything on this page, but I highly recommend cosmetic bags, coasters, mugs and tote bags.

Cricut Maker Materials

What is it?

The Cricut Maker has more capabilities than the Cricut Joy and Cricut Explore Air 2. Because of this, I’ve decided to explain the Cricut Material and uses separate from the other materials.

What is it used for?

The Cricut Maker applies more pressure, so you can cut thicker material like leather, fabric, and thin woods.

Cricut Joy Materials

What is it?

The Cricut Joy can cut most materials that the Cricut Explore Air 2 can…it’s just smaller, which is handy because I can carry it all over my house for different project.

The cool thing about the joy, is you don’t have to use a mat on Smart Products like Smart Vinyl and Iron on- this means you can make projects as long as the material – up to 24 ft!

In this Free Unicorn Stationery Printable Set, I’ve included two letterhead sizes, each with wide lines or smaller lines (depending on the age of the letter writer) and two envelope sizes (5X7 and 8.5X11).

What you’ll need to create this FREE Unicorn Stationery Printable Set

Free Printables (link at the bottom of this post)
Printer (see my recommendations in my Amazon Shop)
White Paper (works best with 8.5X11)
Cardstock (works best with 5X7)
Paper Trimmer (for 5X7 Cards)
White No 10 Envelopes
White A7 Envelopes

How to Print off these Printables

For the letters, make sure select only the letter pages you want to print, and you can print off as many pages you need.
For the 5X7 letters, trim around the gray lines with a paper trimmer.
For the envelopes, select only the envelope page you want to print.
Every printer is different for loading. If you are unsure, get a scratch piece of paper and mark up one side. Feed it through the printer and make note which side it prints on. Or, look up instructions online for your printer.
Load the envelope per your printer settings and print.

Now get busy writing on your new Unicorn Stationery set!

I think letter writing is a lost art, and it always helps motivate you and your kids to write if you have something pretty to write on!

I’m not what you would call a happy camper, but since moving to Colorado, I’ve definitely spent more time outside than I have my whole life. So, I think I may take the leap into camping since my travel bug is getting to me during isolation.

The best part about this activity, is you’ll need limited supplies. You can always bring more drawing and coloring supplies, but with camping you want to keep things simple.

These Camping Drawing Tutorial printables have steps for drawing 2 different characters – a bear and a racoon.

Your child will start by tracing the head of the cartoon, following the numbers for each stroke. They’ll then follow the next steps until they can draw the full cartoon.

Use the blank page of the printable (you may want to print extras, or bring extra blank paper) to have your child try it without help.

My Top Cricut Maker Projects

I’ve created a lot of crafts with my Cricut, but these are my TOP Cricut Maker Projects, and I’m sharing all the details so you can recreate these at home!

Need teacher gifts? I can cut out a printable real quick.

Need some vinyl to dress up my craft space? My maker will do that in a fraction of the time I could do it by hand.

And let’s be honest…I’m never cutting out anything by hand again.

Yes, I’ve got lots of Cricut Maker Projects on this site, but today I’m sharing some of my favorites and your favorites!

Remember, most of these products can ONLY be made with the Maker. If you have another machine, check your materials list to see how you can modify these.

Cricut Knife Blade Cake Topper

Add some texture and dimension to your party decor with this Cricut Knife Blade tutorial.

This tutorial really shows how diverse the Cricut Maker can be. I used print and cut, cut out glitter paper, and chipboard…all using one machine! I just think that’s amazing.

How to Make Felt Roses with the Cricut Maker

The number one thing that sold me on the Cricut Maker was the rotary blade for fabric. I tried it out at the Cricut Make-a-thon and it cuts felt like BUTTER. These roses are so incredibly intricate, and the Maker cut them out, no problem.

This is a project that wouldn’t even be possible without my Maker. I HATE cutting felt by hand – you have to have super sharp scissors and there’s no way you can get it this precise.

I also made some mini Christmas wreaths with the same technique.

Make a toy car with the Cricut Scoring Wheel

This toy car was a big hit with my little guy, and the Cricut Scoring wheel made it SO easy.

I’ve worked with the scoring stylus and the scoring wheel. Both are really handy, but the scoring wheel is much more precise and can score deeper marks so items are easier to fold.

Chipboard Photo Props

Yes…these are for Halloween, but you can create these chipboard photo props for any occasion with images from Cricut Design Space. The great thing about these is that they are really sturdy and you don’t have them flopping around…so the pictures turned out SO GOOD.

Create a Simple Sewing Pattern with the Cricut Maker

Can ya tell I like Halloween? This tutorial shows you how you can use the Cricut Washable Fabric Pen and the rotary cutter to create very simple patterns. I rarely sew, but even I can do this!

DIY Unicorn Confetti

I had to include this tutorial just so you can see what this baby can do. See those TEEEEEENY TINY flowers on the Unicorn? Now see it next to that quarter? Yeah, I was amazed, too.

I kept trying out different sizes. I started out with larger confetti, then I went smaller and smaller.

This kind of detail works best with the Cricut Party Foil. I included some glitter card stock in my confetti, but the unicorn and text was best cut out with the foil.

You guys liked this tutorial so much, I made another one for Mermaid Confetti.

3 in 1 Holiday Wreath

Have you ever left up a wreath through way too many seasons. I mean, who wants to change it out for Fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving?

Well, the Cricut Maker made that easier for you. Just create some bass wood signs to hang on your wreath and you’re covered.

You could also create some spring holiday wreaths with this technique!

Mermaid Tote Bag Tutorial

Out of every Cricut craft I have done, this is by far my favorite.

It’s also the one craft I’ve made that gets used. My daughter LOVES this tote bag and uses it for the pool and soccer practice.

It also helps that it’s really durable since I used Cricut Infusible Ink. It can be washed over and over and the ink will still be vibrant and colorful.

Free Frozen Party Printables

Getting ready for FROZEN 2? Download these FREE Frozen Party Printables and get ideas for an EASY and budget friendly Frozen party.

I can’t believe this Frozen party was five years ago…back when Let it Go was blasting on all the radio stations. Since we’re gearing up for Frozen 2 to hit theaters next month, I decided these Frozen Party Printables needed an update.

This set includes Anna, Elsa and Sven Crowns, Olaf Masks, Snowflake toppers and a Free Frozen banner.

I’m also including the PNG Files so you can cut these out with your Cricut Machine! Scroll to the bottom of this post to download.

Also, my parties were so much simpler back then…when did things get so complicated?

While I’m glad I had the camera upgrade, and I cleaned up my Frozen Party Printable designs, I still think have a Frozen Eggo Waffle party is a pretty great idea.

Think about. It’s super easy, budget friendly, and with yogurt and fruit on top…also a really healthy treat for a party.

I love a big party, but sometimes it’s nice to play things low key. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars and spend hours in the kitchen for the kids to have a good time.

I made delicious AND healthy Eggo Waffles topped with vanilla yogurt, strawberries, blueberries and my homemade chocolate granola. These took about 10 minutes to make, they’re inexpensive AND the kids love them. They were devoured in minutes and my little piggies had seconds.

My kids were so little and I believe I was pregnant with my youngest… Who is ironically crying right now because I won’t let him have Eggo Waffles for the 2nd time today.

I have my limits.
