All you need is a Cricut Bright Pad, lettering pens, and a Brush Lettering Practice guide to create beautiful Hand lettered SVG Files!
Thank you, Cricut for providing me with the Cricut Bright Pad for this post! All opinions are 100% my own.
I’ve been using a lightbox for a while now, so when Cricut came out with theirs, I was so excited! I never actually thought of using a bright pad to see where to weed vinyl, I only used it for lettering…so today I’m combining the two tutorials! I’ll show you how to Create Hand Lettered SVG Files with the Cricut Bright Pad, and how to use it to weed your projects, too!
If you haven’t already, check out the Halloween Brush Lettering Practice Guide that’s free to download. It was created by Random Olive and I love the lettering on it! You can see me work on another one of her practice guides here.
What You’ll Need To Create Hand Lettered SVG Files Using The Cricut Bright Pad:
- A Bright Pad by Cricut
- Brush Lettering Practice Guide (get the free Halloween, Valentine’s Day, or Creative page)
- Tombow Dual Brush Pen – in a dark color, preferably black, but I used purple.
- White paper
- Phone camera or scanner
- Cricut Maker or Cricut Explore Air
- Cricut Design Space
How To Prepare Your Image With The Cricut Bright Pad:
- Print out the practice sheet and secure it to the Bright Pad (I like to use washi tape because it’s not as sticky).
- Place a sheet of white paper over the practice sheet and center the first word on the page.
- Using the brush tip on the Dual Brush Pen, press the pen down for the down strokes and lightly bring it up for the upstrokes. Tip: Check out my Hand Lettering Practice Sheets for Beginners or the Brush Lettering Practice Guide to learn about up strokes and down strokes for each letter. This will help SO much with brush lettering skills!
- Move the sheet up a little bit, then center the next line and letter that onto the paper. Repeat for each line of the practice sheet. Tip: Make sure the spacing is right before you start drawing out each line. I measured it by the lines on the practice sheet.
- When your design is finished, take a picture of it with your iPhone and email it to yourself, or scan it to your computer. Tip: Make sure the whites are really bright and the blacks are really dark.
- If you want to refine your image more, you can take it into Adobe Illustrator. You can see a tutorial for that HERE. However, you can just upload it straight to Cricut Design Space from here, as well. Follow this tutorial for uploading SVG Files.
- Once you’ve cleaned up your image, cut it out on vinyl, Iron On, or Foil Adhesive like I used.
- After you unload the material from the Cricut, tape it to the Bright Pad and start weeding. The Bright Pad will help you see where to weed (SO much more convenient!)
