Learn how to create Patterned Text in Adobe Illustrator. I’m going over who needs this class, the supplies you’ll need to have on hand, and what to expect when you take this course!

When I first started my blogging journey, I couldn’t have anticipated all the fun things I would get to do. Besides it being my dream job, where I get to stay at home with my kids and draw all day, it definitely opened a door for opportunities to work with some great brands. This is no exaggeration that working with Brit & Co for my course on Creating Patterned Text in Adobe Illustrator was the BEST experience so far.
Take the Text Effects in Adobe Illustrator Course!
It’s a little-known fact (or not) that I’m pretty shy and quiet. This was definitely out of my comfort zone, but the Brit & Co team made it super easy, and we’ve developed such a great class for those that want to delve in a little deeper in Adobe Illustrator. So, let me tell you more about this class and why I think you should take it!
What is Patterned Text?
That’s kind of an important question, right? Patterned text is exactly what it sounds like. I apply patterns and textures to many of my printables. There is a pattern tool in illustrator that makes it really easy, but it can be intimidating at first. My class goes into a lot of detail with creating patterns with the pattern tool, then how to apply them to text.
Who is this Brit & Co. class for?
I go over a lot of basic steps in this class, like keyboard shortcuts, saving your files, and all that, but I really think this class is great for intermediate designers. If you’re just starting out, I have a basic class in Adobe Illustrator, and this is a great extension of that. However, if you’ve worked on your own in Illustrator a little bit, but still consider yourself a beginner, this is a great class for improving on some of the basic skills you’ve acquired.
And please excuse my awkward smile below. I had been smiling all day and my face hurt 🤣
What do I need to Create Patterned Text in Adobe Illustrator?
I will be going into depth a little bit more in my class why you need all these supplies, but here’s a quick overview so you can see if this class is right for you.
Software and Digital Supplies
First off, you absolutely need Adobe Illustrator. You can sign up for a free trial, and after that, you’ll pay anywhere from $20.99 a month for the single app or $52.99 a month for Creative Cloud
(it includes all the Adobe apps like Photoshop, Lightroom, premier, etc.). I personally use 5 of the apps, so Creative Cloud
is worth it for me. If you are ready to invest in your printable or graphic design business, Illustrator is the BEST graphic design software out there.
You’ll also need a phone with a camera and Adobe Lightroom (which is why I recommend Creative Cloud). I’ll go over how you’ll use those in the class.
AND you can’t design without some fonts! I find most my fonts on Creative Market (and I’m excited to announce you can now purchase my Crush font set there, too!)
Art Supplies
The thing I love about this class is that it starts by creating acrylic artwork. And you don’t have to just stick with that, but I love the way acrylics digitize, so that’s why I chose that medium. So, you’ll need acrylic paint (inexpensive craft paint is fine), small canvas boards
, and paintbrushes
(round tip is my favorite). The only thing I had to purchase was the canvas boards, but these are great because you can always reuse them by painting another pattern design on top.
The reason I like working with acrylics is that they’re inexpensive and you also get some really nice textures from the brush strokes. I’ll go over the best painting techniques I use in my Text Effects Class.
What is the lesson plan?
This Adobe Illustrator Class is 77 minutes long and trust me when I say, there is no fluff. This class is filled with a lot of information, but since it’s broken up into 10 lessons, you won’t get overwhelmed 🙂
I’ll be going over how to find inspiration, creating patterns and textures with acrylics (which you can also apply to other mediums like I mentioned above), and preparing your image to vectorize it. After that, we’ll create patterns using the pattern tool, and I’ll give you some of the best tips for working with fonts – from pairing fonts to creating the best font layout for using patterns and textures.
Finally, we’ll bring it all together by creating word art that combines all the skills I taught you in the previous lessons.
