Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. butter flavoring
  • 1 oz. red food coloring
  • 3 Tbs. cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbs. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

For the Frosting

  • 3 Tbs. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. slat
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 3 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp. butter flavoring
  • 2 c. sugar

Instructions

For the cake batter

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cream sugar, shortening, eggs and flavoring in a stand mixer.
  • In a small bowl, make a paste of the cocoa and red food coloring, then add to stand mixer.
  • Alternately add flour and buttermilk to the mixture.
  • Mix soda and vinegar in a small bowl, then add to batter. Blend well.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, then let cool.

For the Frosting

  • Microwave milk, flour and salt until thick. Make sure you whisk every 30 seconds or so, then let cool.
  • Cream shortening and sugar for about 10 minutes.
  • Add in milk mixture and flavorings, then mix until blended and frosting is light and fluffy.
