“All that I am or Hope to be, I owe to my Angel Mother” -Abraham Lincoln
This is one of my favorite quotes and I designed this print for one of my favorite people! I’m not new to hand drawn illustrations, but I tried a new technique from an online class that I took and while it took some getting used to, I’m in love with the way it turned out!
I knew I wanted to create word art using Abraham Lincoln’s quote, so first thing I did was draw out some EXTREMELY rough ideas of the type of wording and layout of the design. I decided to go with the circular layout because it was different and girly looking. After I knew the layout, I drew a rough sketch. I made this as final looking as possible, but you can see a few things are off…the circle’s not completely round, the lettering isn’t really straight and HOPE is way off center.
My next step was to create the final sketch. I did this using a compass for the circle, a ruler and a mechanical pencil…nothing too fancy! I just wanted to make sure everything looked symmetrical and straight (but not too straight because I still wanted the hand drawn effect).
My ink started running out when I was drawing, so I had to do more touch ups that I would have liked, but I think the digital is really stinkin’ close to the original! I then placed it on a textured background, changed the colors, added some texture to the words and I was done! Okay, it sounds easy when I say it like that…but this baby took me FOREVER!
I still want to explore some more color and texture options with my future drawings. I tested A LOT of color options and I thought the white text on a colored background was definitely the way to go since this drawing has a lot going on!
You can purchase this print in my shop for $5.50. It includes 8X10″ JPEG images in 3 different colors…it would be the perfect gift for YOUR angel mother 🙂
