Are you stumped on decor ideas for your tween daughter? She will LOVE these easy, modern, and fun Tween Bedroom Ideas! I’ve included tutorial links, where to buy items, and tips to stay on budget!
Tween Bedroom Ideas for girls
I haven’t seen my daughter so happy as when I revealed her Tween bedroom last month. Well, maybe it was the day I let her sleep in her new room! Luckily, she’s used to being the daughter of a blogger and waiting a week for me to style and shoot her room was not entirely out of the ordinary. This room fits my daughter’s personality perfectly and I’m going to give you tips to create something similar with these Tween Bedroom Ideas!

Make The Tween Bedroom functional
This is quite possibly the most important thing. At least for me. Being pretty is all well and good, but if you have a bedroom that isn’t functional, you won’t want to spend time there.
The best way to start is with the things your child likes to do. My daughter loves to read, write and draw. So, it made sense that she needed a desk, and some book shelves…plus with a creative girl like Riley, there can be quite the mess, so that brings us to the next point….
Add plenty of storage!
We have many places for Riley to put her toys and art supplies. I keep a lot of it in her closet (it’s a walk-in…thank goodness!) but she likes to have some on hand. Plastic containers fit perfectly in her desk, along with the notebooks she uses regularly.
Hanging shelves and baskets are also pretty handy, like these from Target. And adding storage within storage is a great way to stay organized. For instance, place some mason jars in the hanging baskets for pens and pencils!
This isn’t pictured, but we also really like these Marker Storage solutions.
Create a Creative Space for your tween
Like I mentioned before, my daughter LOVES to draw and write stories. That’s why I made this cute play area, and it was SO easy and inexpensive.

Again, this goes off of things I know my daughter likes. If your child likes Legos, create a lego building station. If they like superheroes, maybe create a superhero costume closet space. Seriously endless possibilities when you create a tween room – you can be a lot more outrageous in your ideas than other areas of the house….which is why I love creating kid rooms more than anything!
Involve your daughter in tween room design decisions
Focusing on what your child likes isn’t the only way to get them involved with the design process. You can also have them HELP in some of the design decisions.
I know for some people it can be scary to let go of the reigns a bit…but I think if you involve your child in many of the decisions, they’ll surprise you with great ideas!
In this room, Riley made chose the dinosaur head as the focal point on one wall. Secretly, I was hoping she would make that decision when I had her look through all the items from White Faux Taxidermy. This was my one splurge for the room, but for me, it was totally worth it. It’s a surprising and fun element to the design.
Riley also deisgned the Snuggle is Real pillow (which you can purchase as an SVG file in my shop). She picked out the quote and drew the design, then I turned it into an SVG File. I then made a really cute Glitter pillow with my EasyPress2!
Bottom line, this room wouldn’t have had some of it’s best decor ideas if I hadn’t asked Riley for her input.
Not only will you get some great ideas, your child will love the room even more when they know they were involved in the design decisions.
Don’t overload the teen room with decor
It just adds Clutter!
Now that you’ve spent some time brainstorming the functionality and your child has given you some crazy ideas, it’s time to scale it down a little. If you want a tween bedroom with modern details, less really is more. Not only will you have a more cohesive design, the room won’t be cluttered and it will be SOOOO much easier to keep tidy.
You’ll also want to cut out some ideas that you may love for the bigger picture. I knew we wanted some crazy elements in the room, like dinosaurs, cats, unicorns and glitter, so we kept the color palette simple. I also didn’t buy too many decor items for the shelves. Who wants to dust that?
Maybe you want a plethora of colors, so scale down on the themed items in the room. You will thank me when your child doesn’t want to change her room 6 months later!
Tween Bedroom Ideas on a Budget
What projects should I DIY?
I would hope that since you’re here, you’re to a little DIY. Okay, A LOT of DIY!
Before I DIY a project, I ask myself these questions:
- Is it cheaper to buy it than make it? Sometimes I look at somethig and think, “I could make this!” But in reality, it’s less expensive to buy one item than to buy several things to make that item.
- Will it be exactly what I want if I buy it? For example, I found plenty of macrame designs while I was shopping, but they weren’t quite the right style I was going for.
So, if the project is less expensive than purchasing, I’ll usually go for it. However, if I can’t find exactly what I’m looking for, I may spend more money or more time on something that I really want.
Tween Bedroom DIY Projects
These are all the DIY Tutorials I have for this tween room (and I SOOOOO wish that I had that desk tutorial for you, but we made it before my DIY tutorial days):
Reuse or repurpose decor for tween bedroom
I wish I didn’t have a budget at all for home decor projects…but this is real life and in real life you repurpose everything!
Many of the items that you see in this room were in her original design, including all the picture frames, wood pieces, and her desk. I also repainted the magazine stand that used to be my great-grandmother’s, so we also have a nice heirloom in her room.
Her chair used to be my office chair, and I even moved a couple of items from my house into her room that matched. I love black and white, so that wasn’t too hard!
We also moved things around to make the rest of our house more functional. The bed in her old room is notw in the guest room, and we purchased her daybed and armoire over time (like 2 years ago, in fact!)
Just keep in mind that the room reveal may not be over night….it’s perfectly fine (and smart) to add pieces as you go so you can stay on a budget.

Hello. Your daughters room is gorgeous. I am getting ready to transition my daughters room from a little girls room to a tween room. She is getting older and its time. I was curious where you got your daughters floating desk originally? I would love to have it or something like it included in my daughters room when we transition it. The floating aspect is such a space saver as well which I love because that is a huge thing we have to keep in mind when we are doing my daughters room. The shape is kind awkward because its an older house and she has two big windows in her room as well as its just a tiny space. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much! I love the new teen room, so I think it will be a good change for you. That is actually a DIY desk (and I’m kicking myself I didn’t ever take pictures). I know Wayfair has some floating desks, so maybe look there. Wish I could be more help!!

What is the wall color? That room is just perfect for a pre-teen girl!

Thank you! This is a custom color, so I don’t have the name of it 🙁
