These Fabric Handmade Christmas Ornaments and gift tags are adorable! Learn how to give them an embroidered edge. They’re easy to make for any embroidery skill level!
This post is a part of the Handmade Holiday Blog Hop by Spoonflower. All opinions are 100% my own.
When I came up with the idea to do a Handmade Christmas Ornament Series last year, the plan was to make all paper ornaments. That was before I got my Cricut Maker, and before I started designing fabric at Spoonflower…so it’s amazing what will change in a year! I love the way these Fabric Handmade Christmas Ornaments turned out! My plan was to only do an embroidered edge, but I had some embroidery thread left over from my daughter’s 6th birthday party (hoard much???) I’m glad I had it, because these are the cutest!
What you’ll need to make these Embroidered Edge Fabric Handmade Christmas Ornaments
- Coloring Book Christmas Ornament Fabric (I used a fat quarter for 9 ornaments and had some left over)
- Accent Fabric in pink or mint
- Cricut Maker or Fabric Scissors
- Fabric Mat
- Black Fine Point Cricut Pen (if your’e using the maker)
- Black Floss Thread
- Pink Floss Thread
- Gold Floss Thread
- Large Embroidery Needle
(make sure the end is sharp and not dull
- Thermoweb Fusible Fleece (NOTE: you have to soak and dry fabric the day before you make this craft)
- First, you’ll upload the FREE SVG file from the bottom of this post. Tip: Get more instructions for that HERE.
- Resize it if you need to. My ornaments are 3.5″ wide. Change the small marks around the circle to black pen.
- Add a circle to your artboard that is also 3.5″ wide and change the color, so they cut out on different fabrics.
- Copy and paste the circles for as many ornaments as you want. You’ll need two sides to each ornament, one with the markings and one without.
- Place the fabric FACE DOWN on the Mat when cutting.
- Cut the fabrics according to the Maker instructions, adding the pen when it prompts you. The pen should be used on the back side of the ornament.
- When all the fabric is cut, resize the plain circles to about 3.25″, and cut out the dry and preshrunk Thermoweb Fusible Fleece. (see my note above)
- Fuse the fleece to the inside of one of the cut circles by spraying it with water, placing a piece of parchment paper over the fabric and ironing it according to package instructions.
- Now, start embroidering at the top of the ornament. The markings from the pen will be your guide.
- Place one side of the fabric circles over the one with fleece, so the inside of the fabric is facing. Make sure one side has the markings.
- Thread the Black Floss Thread
through the bottom of a marking, then tie a double knot.
- Thread it through the next marking, so it will be at a diagonal.
- Pull the thread through the loop you just made, pull it tight, then knot it again. Repeat for the rest of the circle, then end it with a double knot.
- Loop the Floss through a needle, then loop it around one of your knots, then tie it together. Repeat for every 2 knots.
That’s it! I also tied some floss to the top of the ornament. I think it’s super cute!

These are so darling! I’m new to the Cricut world, just got my first one an Explore Air 2. Will it be able to cut fabric or do you have to have the maker? I’ve been binge reading your blog, thanks so much!

Thank you! The Air 2 can cut fabric, but you will most likely need backing. This page may help you choose which fabric to use: https://help.cricut.com/help/cricut-explore-maker-materials-settings
