Learn to create beautiful Hand Lettered Notebook Art with these simple steps! It’s all the more fun with the NEW Printable Crush Notebooks for Creatives!
My notebooks are about 10% Notes and 90% doodles and drawings. If I’m at a conference, I actually listen better when I’m doodling on paper, rather than note taking. I usually take the key point in a presentation and create some Hand Lettered Notebook Art. Sometimes I leave it in my little notebook, or I replicate it when I get home and digitize it.
I’m getting ready for another conference in a couple weeks, so I knew I had to create some notebooks with my Printable Crush branding and I loved them so much, I had to offer them for sale!

After I got them, I immediately started doodling in them!
As with most skills, hand lettering takes practice. I used the Tombow Dual Brush Markers to create these. I use the brush tip side for brush lettering, then the pen tip for the drawings. I have one in black and pink and I SO need to get all the other colors. They’re just too fun!

To Create Hand Lettered Notebook Art, you’ll need:
- Cute Notebooks
- Sharpie Pens or Tombow Dual Brush Markers
- Paper to prevent bleeding
- Pick a quote. I chose “Adulting Bites” and “Do the Work”…I know they’re contradicting, but that’s how I roll. Start with something short, especially if you have a small notebook.
- Place the piece of paper under the page you’ll be drawing on in your notebook.
- Hand Letter or Brush Letter** the main part of your quote onto your page. I always start with the largest word. Working with brush pens is a little different than hand lettering, but the concept is the same. The down strokes will be thick and the upstrokes will be thin. When you hand letter, you will draw out your word art, then go back and fill in the downstrokes. I like this because I feel more confident and have more control than I do with brush lettering, but it’s more time consuming. However, with practice, I feel like I’ll love brush lettering even more!
- Choose art that will work well with your concept. For example, I chose cookies and lips for the “Adulting Bites” word art. I also like to add flowers and mandalas because those go with pretty much anything and they’re pretty.
The beauty of hand lettered notebook art is that you can create whatever you want and it doesn’t have to be perfect. This is my kind of journaling and I hope you love it!

Just Loved your blog Erin, its very very pretty. Even I have started selling printables recently and I just love it. However,I have no idea about hand lettering so this makes a great post. If you dont mind can you please tell which font you are using for most of your designs in pink color. It looks amazing. In this post you have written ‘creativity art’ ‘notebook art’ in that font.
