This is my first Office Make-Over Progress post. If you’d like to see the finished office, CLICK HERE! It turned out GORGEOUS!!!
I have to say I’m a pretty lucky girl…instead of playing video games during his break, my hubby made my office…like literally made it. I held up the shelf once and I told him where to put things, so I helped a teeny bit too 😉 As a trade off, I painted the kitchen island and the hallway, so you can’t call me lazy!
It’s still got some work to do like painting the desk top, shelf and the window frame (which my husband also made…did I mention I was lucky?), but I think it is looking AMAZING! All it needs is one of my new Cake Mugs! Okay, it probably needs more than that, but it couldn’t hurt!
I got the magnet boards from Ikea and the Wall Rack and shelves are from The Container Store. My husband came up with the idea to use ready-made cabinets and hardware is from Home Depot and the top is just two doors…so it was really inexpensive, but it looks SOOO good! It has made such a difference in the way the house looks. If you don’t believe me, here’s a little refresher:
Yep…I was desperately in need of a new, clean, organized, super functional office…and I’m in love!
Seriously, look how sexy that window looks…
I’m sure that this project will take a lot longer, but I’ll be posting updates as we go along. I’m getting a chair this week (they’re actually for the kitchen, but until I find the perfect chair, they’ll have to do) so I’ll FINALLY be able to use my new desk. I’ve got big plans, people…and I can’t wait to show you the rest!
Edit to add:
It’s finally done! Check out all the tutorials and finished office!

I just found this so funny! I had this idea to make a sewing quilting desk for myself because they are really expensive. I am getting 3 cabinets from Home Depot 18 and 24 ” base cabinets with drawers and an 18″ cabinet. Then 2 30x 80 doors. The second door I’m putting on the back of the cabinet with a hinge and putting casters on so I can move it away from wall and flip the second door up to make a 60×80″ cutting /quilt table. So much nicer then the cheap expensive sewing tables! Looks like you haven’t posted since 2013? Thanks for the tips!

Love the wall organizational system! Very functional and pretty to. I’m such a fan of the chunky brackets that are so popular these days. Just need to find a place to use them in my house.

You are blessed to have such a handy man, my poor hubby works with metal, so its very hard for me to get him in my room and working on it, you would think wood bites him. Just kidding love him, he is just always tiered after his long weeks of work and then he has to care for me, so I share in non of the house hold duties either, he is left with them all do to things out of our control. GOD bless you . it looks great.

I am very lucky! Thank you!

Hi Erin,
This looks amazing! Definitely going into my “things to copy at my house” bin. Do you happen to have a finished pic of your office. I looked on your blog and couldn’t find a posting of it.
Erin says
I’m really embarrassed, but I haven’t posted a picture of it finished yet! I keep meaning to and then I work in it and it gets trashed again! lol…I’ll work on that for 2016! Thanks!!!

Hi Erin, Just found your beautiful craft table! I’m so excited because that is exactly what I want and have been trying to design it. I would love to use the doors but have some questions about it. First, are they the hollow or solid doors? Second, what did your husband do to them? I am worried about my fabric snagging or wood sprinters. Did he sand them and then paint? Did he put any type of poly on the top. Just not sure what to do. Also, did he put an edge on the doors, like a 1″ x 2″, to give it a nice edge? Sorry, for all the questions, but I am so excited I found someone that used doors but I didn’t know how they would turn out. Hope you can help me. Thank you.
Erin says
Hi Diane! I’m so glad you like it! I just forwarded your questions to my husband and I’ll respond when he gets back to me. I had almost nothing to do with the creation of my office, so he’s a better person to ask 🙂
Erin says
Okay, here is my husband’s response. Hope this helps!!
So, this is the 10th project I have done using doors as countertops and have never had a problem. For best results, a solid wood Vanier door is the best. Sanding the doors and applying a high gloss lacquer/poly will give the best finish and will hold up the longest.
However, if you don’t have a big budget (like us) we used a hollow door. Since it is hollow, you need to keep the edges if you cut the doors down to size. You just take the “cap” that they have at the edges and insert it into the open edge you will have if you cut it. It is very similar to a 1X2 piece of wood. We wanted a paint finish, so we sanded it and painted it with a high gloss paint. This isn’t the best option because it doesn’t repel dirt like a lacquer or epoxy paint. We have considered putting glass on top; or just redoing with an expoxy. We have never had a problem with them splintering or anything like that.
If you would like to trim them out to look nicer than just a square edge you can. There is a solid edge around the door you can nail into. I have even routers the edges before. Don’t overthink it. Treat it like a big piece of wood.
Good luck!

What kinda of frame did he use to mount container store and Ikea on??

My husband made it!
