If someone had asked me write a post about health advice two years ago, I would have laughed. I didn’t really have much to offer except “Carbs are yummy!” While that’s still true, I’ve started trying harder at making healthy choices this year. I’ve changed my exercise habits, eating habits and over all lifestyle habits and I feel great (that’s saying a lot since I’m 5 months pregnant!)
I am the type of person to take on too much at a time. I can’t pass up a good opportunity and my health definitely suffered for it this year. In January, I started having anxiety attacks every day for weeks and besides that, I just felt crummy. It was the first time in my life that I wasn’t happy and that was really scary for me. I went to the doctor and discovered I had a sinus infection. I got some antibiotics, and I just started taking better care of myself. Going to the gym did wonders and since then I haven’t had a panic attack. It really wasn’t a mental issue for me, it was physical.
I was doing really well till I got another sinus infection, which led to a horrendous ear infection. I recovered from the ear infection, started going to the gym again and then I started feeling really crummy again. I didn’t realize it for 2 months, but I was pregnant with my third child! I was so sick for the first trimester, but when I finally reached my 2nd trimester I started feeling amazing. With my first two kids, I wanted cinnamon rolls and donuts. With this baby, I want fruits and fish. I think a lot of this had to do with my eating and health habits BEFORE I got pregnant.
I mentioned in my Back to School post how I used my Walgreen’s Balance Rewards Program to get my daughter’s school supplies for just $3 (!!!!), but now you can also get points for making healthy choices! I still have to force myself to go to the gym, so this is definitely the kind of motivation I need! The healthy rewards program keeps track of your workout goals, weight, hours of sleep and overall health. You get points for goals met, and daily activity. So, if you walk 1,000 steps, you get 20 points and setting a goal gets you 250 points! Once you reach 10,000 points, you can get $10 off your purchase (that should give you some incentive to stay active!) You can even connect your program to your Fitbit or other tracker to make it easier to track.
These are a few things I bought at Walgreens to stay healthy…I DO NOT want to relive my whole sinus/ear infection fiasco so I have to take Claritin and Saline nasal spray everyday. Plus, I need my prenatals and a healthy snack!
I also created a printable that would be easy for me to update. I don’t do calorie counting or anything detailed…I don’t have the time! So I just write down my monthly goals, and check off the goals I meet each day. By the end of the month, I can see my progress and it will only take seconds to fill out every day! I use happy faces and check marks…it’s really technical and detailed as you can tell. I put it on my fridge along with my kids’ chore charts 🙂
